An Agenda for Tomorrow

What I heard last night from across the nation was the song of hope, the melody of optimism reclaimed. I spent the day today playing the tune over and over in my mind, savoring every ephemeral minute of it. I expect you might have, too.

Gratifying as it is, in truth the 2-1 margin of victory for Prop. 50 – and Democrats running the table across the nation – is but one big step toward vanquishing this vile autocracy (fascism by any other name) to the trash heap of history. We have miles to go.

Tomorrow, the SLO County Democratic Party will get back to the hard work of helping rescue our republic from Trump’s reign of cruelty, corruption, incompetence and illegality, and the maga cult’s robotic fealty to it. (BTW, I refuse to dignify “maga” with the upper case).

Thank you all for all you’ve done – and continue to do – in this struggle. It’s cliché but true: We’re stronger together. We simply can’t do this work without you.

As I repeat often, Democrats do things for us; Republicans do things to us. With that in mind, flush with satisfaction from mauling a party intent on doing things to us, I offer this policy memo in hope that it might guide our thoughts and actions as we enter the post victory-dance phase of our struggle.

This is my personal political agenda for 2026-28, which I fantasize would be adopted by the Democratic Party as its national playbook for winning back our democracy in 2026 and 2028.:

Nationally

  • Medicare for all (tax billionaire tech bros, oil barons and oligarchs to help pay for it);

  • Reform the Supreme Court (increase from 9 to 13 seats; impeach Thomas, Alito and Kavanaugh for taking “gifts,” aka bribes);

  • Presidential pardon reform (no more self-dealing);

  • Eliminate immunity for crimes committed by sitting presidents;

  • Immigration reform (amnesty for all who’ve been here X number of years);

  • Restore all environmental / climate policies and programs slashed by Trump;

  • Start work to abolish the Electoral College, a relic of protecting the political power of slave states;

  • Codify Roe v. Wade into law;

  • Increase the federal minimum wage from $7.25 to $15/hour;

  • Legalize marijuana in all 50 states;

  • Adopt national gun safety laws akin to California’s.

Locally

  • Vote maga District Attorney Dan Dow out of office;

  • Defend and expand our majority on the SLO County Board of Supervisors;

  • Elect more Dems to every elected body in SLO County (city councils, school boards, special districts);

  • Call on every elected body in SLO County to adopt resolutions affirming their support of democracy and a return to the constitutional principles that form the foundation of our republic (then see who opposes it);

  • Call on every elected official in SLO County to oppose, on the record;

  • Trump’s aggressive lawlessness and corruption;

  • Trump’s desecration of our White House and the Constitution;

  • Trump’s masked, unaccountable, lawless, heavily armed, unleashed army of violent goons kidnapping migrants and American citizens, beating and gassing anyone who resists (i.e., stop trying to re-enact 1930s Germany gestapo);

  • Trump’s destruction of our government’s reliance on facts, science, medicine, math and court orders in setting policy;

  • Trump’s murder on the high seas.
